Career
Writing was something I'd always wanted to do but for a huge chunk of my time in education I just assumed that was impossible. And being a journalist of some description hadn't even crossed my mind. It was only after University, when I was trying to write a book that I began writing articles and reviews for myself.
One day I found out that MCM Buzz were looking for writers. I applied and got accepted. It started a relationship with them that's still going today. Thanks to MCM my articles had a place to be, I got my first paid writing gigs for the MCM Comic con booklets and saw my articles published in MyM magazine.
I started with MCM just before flying off to Toronto. I spent the best part of a year there and the time away gave me the incentive to actually have a proper go at this writing lark. I spent November doing Nanowrimo and after that looked for some freelance writing gigs. I did some really odd things to start with. I reviewed online storage sites and pet food (yeah, that was a weird one).
But along the way I spotted an internship for a social media position. I'd had an interest in social media before then. It seemed like an essential skill to learn before I finally launched my first book. The internship was a ton of fun and it's the reason I have the job I've got now.
So where do books and fiction fall into this? Like most authors starting out they get pushed and squeezed into spare time. I look at how long the first book took me to finish and it horrifies me a little bit. But as writers with experience know, you get quicker at the whole thing. My second book is already finished and has been for a while. Of course there's a whole bunch of editing to do, but let's hope that gets quicker too.
